Caged in a Beaver Catcher!

In order to catch the Ground Hog that was helping itself to our vegetable garden Olivia and I set a "Beaver Catcher" as she called it, and it worked! This critter now lives very far away from us. The previous night I caught a skunk in the trap! Luckily for me he was very cooperative and didn't spray me as I put the cage in my truck, drove him to a park and let him out.

Victim of the Ice Storm

Last Summer my parents neighbor Pam offered to let us have the old swing set in her yard. Mark and I disassembled it and carried it across the road to my parents yard where we reassembled it. Olivia and Emily got one weekends worth of fun on it before a massive ice storm brought trees down on it and smashed it. I'll try to fix it this summer.

That Darn Duck!

Tjörnin, the city pond in Reykjavik is home to a lot of waterfowl and Olivia wanted to feed them all! She got a little too comfortable with one big gray goose though and he bit her finger while eating out of her hand. "That darn duck bit me!" she wailed.

Lixus was part of a chain of Phoenician- Carthaginian settlements along the northwest coast of Africa dating back to the 7th century BC. When Carthage fell to Ancient Rome, Lixus became a Roman imperial outpost.

Supposedly the location of the mythological garden of the Hesperides, Atlas' daughters, was Hera's orchard in the far western corner of the world, where the immortality-giving golden apples grew.

My Thanksgiving in Acton Massachusetts 2002

A very Massachusetts Thanksgiving. The Mass Pike was completely jammed with holiday travelers. There was a light dusting of snow on the ground. The house had actually been renovated by Bob Villa on "This Old House" back in the day. The women were all busy cooking the wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. The men, well we were of course all gathered around the tube watching Dallas or Detroit play somebody. Before dinner everyone held hands in a big circle while Aunt Ginny the nun said a prayer and then we each added what we were thankful for.

I was the "new boyfriend" so I was tasked with taking that years photo of the whole crew with everyone's cameras. I guess if I'd made it to two years I'd have been included in the next one. It's a pretty good technique for keeping the transients out of the "permanent record." Still I was thankful to be welcomed there for a memorable Massachusetts Thanksgiving.

Olivia knew she wanted to be Maria von Trapp from The Sound of Music for a long time before Halloween and she had a blast in her costume. Joana made everything but the guitar case which was my handywork.

Like Father, Like Son
