Icelandic Protest

Icelandic protesters form a circle around their parliament building in downtown Reykjavik, November 2008. Iceland's financial system was at the forefront of the global economic meltdown and people there were not happy about it.

A vacuum, inside a forgery, wrapped in an illusion.

Las Vegas- Costume crown jewel of a culture completely enamored of skin deep materialism. It's not that it doesn't have any character. It just doesn't have any character of substance. So if you crave substance, the only real reason to go once is so you can refute anyone who says you need to go at least once.

Maybe that's too harsh. But unless you just really enjoy the idea of giving away your money in exchange for the experience of... having given away your money, or you enjoy watching other people who do, then do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. OK, again maybe "anywhere else" is too extreme but it amazes me how many people go to places like Vegas and Disney over and over again with no desire to experience anything outside of that self imposed experiential rut. You've gotta love the artificial to enjoy this place so why not just stay home and watch TV? If you want something real or authentic just go outside and explore your neighborhood, unless you live IN Vegas your hometown probably has more to offer!

But hey that's just my humble, hung-up opinion, you might actually enjoy yourself, and at night it gets all sparkly!

Arches National Monument

The girls pose for a classic tourist shot at Arches National Monument outside Moab, Utah. Bowing to fatherly pressure Olivia does her best to refrain from striking one of her runway model poses (see below, where do they learn this stuff??!!)

Big Yellow Kayak

My mom and dad enjoyed exploring Lake Powell in the Big Yellow Kayak we carried around on the back of the houseboat.

Moveable Waterfront Apartment with Awesome Views

We rented a houseboat on Lake Powell on the Utah/Arizona border. Each day we took the houseboat farther up or down the lake to a new canyon or cove in search of a nice secluded anchorage with great views and a good swimming beach. It was great way to see some amazing scenery and enjoy the water.

What's Big and Black and Has a Lot of Legs?

It was morning at our cabin at the Lodge at Big Sur. Olivia woke up and went to the bath room to go potty. A few moments later she called out, "Hey Daddy, what is big and black and has lots of legs?"

"I don't know, what is big and black and has lots of legs?" I responded.

"Well I don't know either but it is climbing in the shower." she calmly informed me through the closed door!

The Road to Thingvellir

Thingvellir (Þingvellir), which translates to "Thing Field" is the home of the Althing (Alþingi), or National Parliament of Iceland. Having moved to Reykjavik it is still in existence today, making it the oldest such body in the world.

The "Thing Field" sits in a rift valley formed by the pulling apart of the North American and European tectonic plates, part and parcel of Iceland's active geothermal nature.
