Great Sand Dunes Part 5

We hike out to an area called the Sand Pit. It's a hot dry day and the dry sand gives way under our feet making every step take twice the effort. We take lots of photos as Olivia naps in the shade of a Gray Horsebush.

Heavy Weather at Cliff Palace, Mesa Verde

We went to see the Cliff Palace ruins at Mesa Verde and were with the last group going that day. The ranger almost cancelled it because of threatening weather but we all begged her to go and she finally relented. The weather came though and we all waited under one of the huge rock over hangs as lightning strikes lit the darkened sky and filled the canyon with crashing thunder. It was an awesome display and added to the atmosphere of the place.

Great Sand Dunes Part 4

We got to the dunes late in the day just after thunder showers had passed through the area. We had time for a good hike around as the sun went down and the recent rain made the sand easier to walk on.

Slinking back to Paris - - - - with our axle between our legs.

We were on our way to Sardinia or so we hoped, but our car went slightly off the road in the mountainous region of Auvergne and we had to leave it and take a train back to Paris where we regrouped and planned a different trip.
